Obituary for Donald Harold Gabbert

Donald Harold Gabbert, age 83, of Pocatello, Idaho, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2019 in Pocatello. He was born on March 10, 1935 in Pocatello to Harold H. and Ada E. (Elser) Gabbert.
Growing up, Donald’s sisters remember him as a sweet little guy, so full of life and love for everyone. He had many friends and was industrious and hard working. Family evening time was often spent singing together. Donald had a wonderful singing voice. He loved being around and spending time with his friends and family. He especially enjoyed teasing his nieces and nephews.
Donald attended Emerson Grade School, Franklin Jr High and one year at Pocatello High School. He finally got his high school diploma at age 68. Everyone was so proud of him!
Donald served in the US Army Reserve for approximately 10 years during the Vietnam and Korea war eras. He was assigned cooking duties which explains his ability to produce massive amounts of great tasting chili. He really loved to cook throughout his life.
Donald greatly enjoyed the outdoors and he loved to fish with his dad and brother. Family and friends would often join him shooting out on the range and hillsides. He also liked to deer hunt. He was an avid reader and instilled this interest into his children. Reading took him on many adventures and places that physically he could not go. He also enjoyed going to the gym to be with friends and liked to get together with the guys he worked with at Simplot. Following his 40 years of service at Simplot, he enjoyed the annual dinner parties they have. After retirement he gave of his time, talents and interests to people with disabilities. He and his sisters loved watching old western movies together, especially John Wayne shows. He was known to always have a bowl of popcorn nearby.
Donald married Beverly Gates in 1956 and together they raised four children, Bobby, Kevin, Kim, and Jeffrey. Beverly and Donald later divorced.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Ada; his brother, Kenneth; and his sons, Bobby and Jeff. He is survived by his daughter, Kim (Dave) McClung of Pocatello; his son, Kevin Gates of Ontario, Canada; his sisters, Nancy (Hank) Pollman of Idaho Falls, Joyce Gabbert-Lockhart of Tuscan, Arizona, and Betty Wood of Smithfield, Utah; and sister-in-law, Jean Gabbert of Pocatello; as well as his grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held 11:00 AM on Friday, January 11, 2019 at the University Bible Church located at 4700 North Philbin Road in Chubbuck.
